What did you do to your FJ-tracer-gt today?

Recommended Posts

Fast Red 2015 FJ-09 got dipped! Decided to try plasti-dip for the first time and had my brother sketch out a buncha color options on Photoshop and this is what we came up with, I'm quite happy with how it came out! Let me know what you guys/gals think, if anyones interested the colors are Army Green Camo and wheels are Copper Metallizer.  Still need to paint/switch the red side FJ-09 sticker but it doesnt look too bad either way!

I like those copper wheels!   I assume you used masking-tape around the tyre edges and didn't take the tyres off?

I pretty much used a tire cleaner gel, put some on a rag and wiped it on the edge of the tire making sure not to touch the edge of the rim, once the paint dried you can easily peel the dried paint off the tire, whatever doesnt peel off came off pretty easily with a micrifiber towel.

The wheels look great, do you think the plasti-dip is durable enough to withstand a tire change or does it simply peel right off?

@ridebmx . I think it looks fantastic, GREAT JOB,
I would love to hear a bit more on the proceedure and products used. I have been looking for a relatively cheap and non-permanent option to change the color on mine.
It was a bit tedious of a process cause you have to take all the panels off... and the little side panels and the main cowl panel are attached with these small little pressure type clips that are annoying to take off.   Took off entire gas tank(make sure its as empty as possible).  I cleaned and dried everything thoroughly and taped off a few things like the gas cap top, edges of the fuel tank (not necessary, i would have saved time by painting the whole thing) and a few other black bits I didnt want to get color on.I took off the wheels, discs, sprocket and taped off the side of the wheel hub and the little slots where the disc and sprocket sit so it goes back together flush.  I then laid everything out on a couple pieces of wood ready for paint.

You got to use like 4 layers of black or grey plastidip paint(depending on color) as the base layer then 3-4 layers of the actual color paint  to get the best finish and for it later to peel off without a problem.  All in all took me about 8-10 hours total between two days cause it mostly a lot of prep then waiting 15 minutes between each layer, so set aside a nice afternoon to do it if you ever decide.  I got everything on kppigments.com and dipyourcar.com.  Dipyoutcar youtube channel has great videos on how to do everything.  All in all cost me like $60 which is not bad at all.
The finish is a little bit rubbery/sticky but once it dries it improves and they make a spray in a bottle to make the plastidip feel more like a real paint and more slick(i ordered some and will be getting soon to test).

Hope this helps, let me know if you got any specific questions.

Also heres the photoshop samples my brother did for me to narrow down a color, they really helped, we played around mostly with greens but tried some wild colors that I didnt save haha!

Good question, will wait to find out myself, maybe if it was done professionally then can preserve it but I think it would peel if done by hand unfortunately.

Hi @marylandrider - Curious what your initial feedback is on the GPR damper. With the suspension really sorted out on my bike, I’m less convinced that it’s necessary. It’s beautiful, however, and that’s tempting all by itself.
I only have maybe 40 or so miles with the GPR on the bike so this is a very initial feedback. I agree with the suspension sorted out it is a lot better but for me I was still getting a little bit more wobble than I wanted with cross winds and wind off of large vehicles on the highway. This completely removes all of that wobble from wind. Maybe i just need to adjust the suspension a little more for things like that but in the mean time it works quite well.
The look of it is something that I do love. I think the gold is a nice compliment.

What do you think of this aux light setup? I could bring them in narrower and/or up or down a little.

Since you asked... Honestly, I think the bar across the front end looks hideous.  It looks completely out of place.

So Patonme is correct. That’s not going to work. Look at the forks and realize the front fender tire will travel as high as the exposed silver fork piston has room to travel. As a guy with a cracked front fender from not taking that clearance into account, your setup is definitely not going to work.
